Q: What is a Visa® Check Card? 
A: It's a Check card that essentially operates as an electronic checkbook at any merchant who accepts Visa® Check cards as a form of payment. It also doubles as an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card for making deposits, withdrawals, or transfers between your checking and savings accounts. It can be used as an ATM card wherever you see the Visa, Shazam, Plus, Cirrus, STAR or NYCE symbols.

A: No! As a Check card, it automatically deducts purchases from your checking account rather than adding to the balance on a line of credit.

Q: What is the fee for a Visa® Check Card? 
A: Inactive Card Fees. The primary account linked to either an open ATM card or Visa® Check Card issued by American Bank and Trust Company, N.A., will be charged a $15 fee for each twelve month period in which no transactions were conducted by you with the ATM card or Visa® Check Card. Transaction Fees. A fee of $1.00 will be charged per cash withdrawal over four (4) per statement cycle when you use your American Bank and Trust Company, N.A., ATM Card or Visa® Check Card at ATMs not owned by American Bank and Trust Company, N.A.

Q: How safe is it to use a Visa® Check Card?
A: Very safe! To use your card, you must use your personal identification number (PIN) for ATM and point-of-sale (POS) transactions. A lost or stolen card is of no value to another person as long as they don't know your PIN. Likewise, Merchants who accept a Visa® Check Card would require any transaction be completed by your signature, which they are expected to compare and verify with your signature on the back side of your Visa® Check Card.

Q: Should I keep my ATM card? 
A: No. Once your receive and successfully activate your Visa® Check Card, destroy your ATM card. There is no need to carry both cards. Remember, your Visa® Check Card is an ATM card. It provides you with the same functionality of your ATM card and more.

Q: Can I use my Visa® Check Card for a Cash Advance? 
A: Yes. You may use your Visa® Check Card for a cash advance at any time. There are no associated transaction or finance charges imposed by American Bank and Trust Company for a cash advance.

Q: How do I keep track of purchases?
A: Merchants will give you a receipt for your purchases just as they normally would. Plus, each purchase will be detailed on your monthly checking account statement. ATMs will provide transaction receipts as usual. Be sure to record all of your transactions in your check register.

Q: How many days before my Visa® Check Card purchase posts to my account? 
A: The average time between merchant authorization and posting is 2-3 days. It depends on the settlement procedure the merchant uses for processing Visa sales transactions.

Q: With my Visa® Check Card, do I still need a credit card? 
A: Yes, if your prefer to buy on credit or if you want to spread out payments. A Check card will not allow making payments over time. The amount of your purchase is deducted immediately from the available balance in your checking account.

Q: Do I pay interest or finance charges on purchases?
A: No. Visa® Check Card purchases are posted directly to your checking account. You are not making a credit card purchase subject to finance charges. The only transaction fees you will have are those associated with your ATM card usage.

Q: Can I link my savings account to my Visa® Check Card?
A: Yes and No. You can access your savings account with a Visa® Check Card via ATMs. However, all purchase transactions will be posted to your checking account.

A: Contact our Client Services Department immediately toll free at 1-877-626-2265, ext. 6524. You must contact us within 48 hours of your card being lost or stolen to eliminate your liability for fraudulent card usage.  For assistance after normal business hours, call 1-800-847-2911.

Q: Do I still need to order checks?
A: Probably. While the Visa® Check Card is widely accepted you may still be required to or desire to write an occasional check for a purchase or a bill. For your convenience, we suggest you maintain a supply of checks at all times.

A: Your Visa® Check Card can be used at any merchant that accepts the Visa® Check Card as a form of payment. When making telephone, mail order or Internet purchases, make sure your billing address matches the mailing address on your corresponding American Bank and Trust Company checking account or the purchase may be declined due to the address verification software some merchants use.

Q: What happens when I return a Visa® Check Card purchase? 
A: The return will be handled as if you made the purchase with a credit card. The merchant will credit your checking account for the amount of your purchase instead of giving you the return purchase amount back in cash.

Q: I want to close my account. What should I do? 
A: You must deliver all Visa® Check Card cards linked to your account immediately. After one business week, we will issue you a check for the remaining balance in your account. This procedure allows for any authorized but unposted transactions to post to your account before it is closed.

Q:My Visa® Check Card was captured at an ATM. Will it be returned to me?
A: No. Visa® Check Card rules prohibit captured Check cards from being returned to cardholders in an effort to prevent fraud, theft, and counterfeiting. If your card is captured by an ATM, contact our Client Services Department immediately at 1-877-626-2265, ext. 6524 and a new Visa® Check Card will be ordered, applicable fees will be assessed.

Important Reminders:

You can use your Visa® Check Card anywhere Visa® Check Cards are accepted. If you choose the Credit option when making a purchase, there is no need to enter your PIN.

 

If you choose the Check/ATM option and experience any difficulty, simply try again and select the Credit option.

 

Either way, the amount of your payment or purchase will be deducted from your checking account.

 

Please be advised that certain merchants such as hotels, motels, lodging, restaurants, car rental companies airlines, passenger railways and U.S. cruise lines may require outstanding authorizations and/or gratuities that place an extended hold on your account. This practice may affect your daily withdrawal limit.

 

Electronic Fund Transfers

When you use an American Bank and Trust Company, N.A., Visa® branded card at a merchant that settles in currency other than US dollars, Visa® will charge an International Service Assessment (ISA) fee to complete the transaction regardless if there was a currency conversion involved to convert your transaction to US dollars. 

 

  • If there was no currency conversion involved with your transaction (“single-currency transaction”) the ISA fee is 0.8% of the transaction amount. 
  • If there was a currency conversion involved with your transaction (“multi-currency transaction”) the ISA fee is 1% of the transaction amount. 

 

An international transaction is defined by Visa® as a transaction where the issuer’s country (i.e., the card-issuing financial institution’s country) is different than the merchant’s country.

 

Depending upon the merchant you patronize, any transaction could qualify as an international transaction, including Internet based transactions.

 

Fees

  • We do not charge for preauthorized payments from accounts opened by individuals for personal, family, or household purposes.
  • We do not charge for preauthorized direct deposits to accounts opened by individuals for personal, family, or household purposes.
  • Except as indicated elsewhere, we do not charge for electronic funds transfers. During any interruption of any electronic funds service, the dollar amount or the frequency of transactions may be reduced.
